VIII International Geant4 School

17-22 November 2019, Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Belgrade. Serbia

A five days hands-on Geant4 course organized by Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare and Vinća Institute of Nuclear Sciences will be held in Belgrade (Serbia) from November 17th to 22nd, 2019. Geant4 is a software toolkit, written in C ++, for simulating tracking of particles in the matter with the Monte Carlo approach. The software is developed and maintained by an international collaboration of scientists belonging to different institutions. Geant4 can be used for applications in high energy physics, astrophysics, medical physics, particle astrophysics and nuclear physics. The topics of the VIII International Geant4 School will cover both high energy/nuclear physics and medical applications. Lectures will cover all aspects of the toolkit from basic installation through advanced topics and will be interspersed with examples that build a progressively more complex application, extensible to real space and medical use. A dedicated short C++ course is also included to get familiar participants with the basic elements of the Geant4 programming language. The school is aimed at PhD students, medical physicists and young researchers working at universities or research institutes. On the last day of the School, students will have the opportunity to test their learning achievements through a written exam. The successful outcome of the test will be reported on a written certificate for those interested. A simple attendance certificate will also be available on request. Registration is opened, a maximum number of 55 participants will be admitted. Registration fee:

  • 150 € for registration before October 10th, 2019
  • 200 € for late registration

Microdosimetry for radiation therapy

September 13, 2019, Hiroshima, Japan

Paolo Colautti will have a lecture on "Microdosimetry for radiation therapy" at the 19th International Conference on Solid State Dosimetry (SSD19), 15-20 September 2019 in Hiroshima City, Japan http://ssd19.org/

Microdosimetry is a chapter of the radiation physics. It gives a full theoretical description of the energy absorbed in a finite site caused by a single radiation event. When the site size is comparable with biological structures, microdosimetry physical quantities describe the first step of events that give eventually rise to the biological effect. Microdosimetry is nowadays the best heuristic tool to assess the biological effect of a mixed radiation field without direct biological measurements. The lecture syllabus: i) historical background; ii) scientific background; iii) microdosimetric quantities; iv) microdosimetric detectors; v) microdosimetry for BNCT; and vi) microdosimetry for ion radiotherapy.

ENLIGHT Annual Meeting & Training Event

July 1-3 July, 2019, Caen, France

The 17th ENLIGHT annual meeting will be hosted by Centre François Baclesse, Caen, France, between 1st and 3rd July 2019.

The European Network for Light Ion Hadron Therapy (ENLIGHT) was established in 2002 following various European particle therapy network initiatives during the 1980s and 1990s. ENLIGHT started its work on major topics related to hadron therapy (HT), such as patient selection, clinical trials, technology, radiobiology, imaging and health economics. It was initiated through CERN and ESTRO and dealt with various disciplines such as (medical) physics and engineering, radiation biology and radiation oncology. A regular annual meeting structure was started in 2002 and continues until today bringing together the various disciplines and projects and institutions in the field of HT at different European places for regular exchange of information on best practices and research and development.

XVI Seminar on Software for Nuclear, Subnuclear and Applied Physics

May 26-31, 2019, Alghero, Italy

XVI Seminar on Software for Nuclear, Subnuclear and Applied Physics" organized by INFN, University of Sassari and the “Centro Siciliano di Fisica Nucleare e Struttura della Materia. The Seminar will be held at Porto Conte Hotel, Alghero (Sardinia, Italy) from May 26th-31st 2019.

The Seminar is aimed at PhD students and researchers, interested on software and its applications. It is structured in topical didactic units, lectures and practical sessions on the recent software developed for fundamental physics as well as for applied physics. This year the seminars will be focused on Machine Learning in Physics.

Moreover, an official beginner course on the Geant4 Monte Carlo toolkit is organized within the Seminar, featuring lessons and practical exercises given by Geant4 Collaborators. The Seminar will also include a basic course on scientific programming in Python, with practical hands-on.

Registration is opened (deadline is April 30th, 2019) and all information can be found at the page: http://agenda.infn.it/event/AlgheroSeminar2019 In addition, for interested people, a test examination will be performed at the end of the school and a written certificate with grade will be issued. The Seminar poster is available at the following link: https://agenda.infn.it/event/17240/page/2343-seminar-poster

1st Meeting of the Biophysics Collaboration

May 20-22, 2019, Darmstadt, Germany

" Every scientists interested in biomedical applications at particle accelerator is invited to contribute with your ideas and proposals. The participation is free, but registration on this webpage is mandatory. All information on the meeting will be posted on this website."

"The International Biophysics Collaborations goes beyond FAIR. In fact, there are many new accelerator facilities under construction all over the world (e.g. NICA in Russia, RAON in Korea, FRIB in USA, SPIRAL2 and SPES in Europe, etc.) where applied nuclear physics program are planned and biomedical research will be possible. The International Collaboration that we want to create will serve all these facilities, and will develop research programs and specific devices for use at various accelerators. The meeting will create a community of applied nuclear physics at accelerators that will look for new exciting research opportunities generated by the new facilities. To give a structure to the Collaboration, we will elect a spokesperson and an executive committee that will establish working groups and task forces on different topics."

Micro- and nanodosimetry for radiotherapy

November 17-18, 2017, Glasgow

Increased use of light-ion beam therapy, brachytherapy using low-energy emitters and radionuclide therapy have renewed and increased interest in micro- and nanodosimetry applied to RT. Long term experience in radioprotection, space and environment exists resulting in vast experience with detectors and modelling. Aim of this workshop is to bring these communities in better contact, to get the detector community interested in RT applications and to raise awareness within the RT community of the potential impact. Some initiatives have already moved in that direction (e.g. BioQuaRT, MediNet, etc.) The workshop aims to address this topic in a broad sense covering all applications in radiotherapy.

Talk presented at the workshop: P. Colautti, G. Magrin: Experimental microdosimetry of WG 8 of MediNet
